A short trip to Perivolas, Santorini - (Without the Children)

Best time to go: April - October
We went: Early July

Perivolas Santorini

Booking a short holiday without the children can be really difficult, you do not want to stay at a hotel or resort that is full of other families, as you then end up missing your own. With that in mind, I cast my mind back to the many hotels that I had longed to book but that had age restrictions on accompanying little ones. Perivolas in Santorini immediately sprang to mind, famous for it's infinity pool, amazing views and sunsets and a hotel that I had many times dreamt of visiting, I emailed to see if they had availability.

The amazing attention to detail and impeccable service begins immediately. No sooner had I sent my enquiry email before a delightful response arrived in my inbox from Majda.  Majda made us feel immediately as if Perivolas was the right choice for our relaxing break by taking care of all the details and by booking us into her favourite suite, room 12, which upon arrival, certainly lived up to its billing.

Perivolas is a small and unique resort. 300 year-old caves, once the homes of local fisherman have been restored and transformed into 17 individual luxury suites. Room 12, situated at the top of the resort, is indeed a special room, the views and privacy are fantastic. Food can be served in your room, out on an idyllic private terrace, which every room at Perivolas enjoys, or by the pool, with the spectacular Aegean sunset as a back drop.

There is plenty to do at Perivolas, the infinity pool needs no description at all, the pictures really do speak for themselves. A 24 hour fitness studio, outdoor jacuzzi, massage room and restaurant, all enjoy stunning views over the volcano and mesmerising Caldera below. The restaurant is perfectly placed by the pool and is where you can enjoy delicious food or some of the best cocktails I have tasted.

Top Tips

Book the candlelit poolside table with the views under the stars early as it is a popular choice and be sure to try a Pina Colada!

Should you want to tear yourselves away from the heavenly surroundings of Perivolas, a cobbled path leads to a white marble pedestrian area, edged either side with boutiques, gift shops and tavernas. The cliff top path leads to the remains of an old Venetian fortress and a steep stairway to the Port of Amoudi.

Not only can you take a boat from here to the volcano submerged under the sea but the fish here is the best to be found in Oia, get there early enough and you can watch the fisherman bringing in the daily catch.

Top Tips

Avoid walking around lunchtime, this is the hottest part of the day and the walkway into town offers no shade for respite.

For fresh fish, head down to the Port of Amoudi. The tavernas in town sell predominantly frozen fish owing to the steep climb from the port to the town.

Where to Shop: Wave Sculpture and Ammos, clothes and accessories

Where to Eat: Katina Fish Tavern

Perivolas Santorini

Santorini enjoys a rich history and there is much to learn. The colours of the cliffs that surround the cauldron like space, which the sea filled following an almighty volcanic eruption around 1600 BC are hard to forget. The crater dropped into the sea, leaving its east rim above the water and formed the horseshoe shaped main island that is now known as Santorini. Take a boat trip out to snorkel beside the deep volcanic cliffs or to see the traditional fishermen's huts and nearby villages. Perivolas will help you orgnaise the perfect boat trip, with or without an accompanying luxury lunch.

The sunset viewed from Oia is legendary. Standing amidst the crowds who clap when the sun sets, can ruin the experience so finding a quieter spot is recommended.

Top Tips

Do not watch the sunset from the packed streets, book a table either at 1800 Restaurant or Red Bicycle and watch the sunset from the roof top terrace. (Pre-book and ask for a sunset table).

Having stayed at many amazing places over the years, Perivolas is definitely up there as one of my favourites. Every experience is made special by the surrounding views, the staff are attentive and friendly, the food delicious and the rooms cool sculptured spaces that you simply do not want to leave. I am already looking forward to my next visit.
